Benzyl benzoate
Benzyl benzoate is an organic compound with the structural formula C₁₄H₁₂O₂, also known as the methyl ester of benzoic acid.
It has a wide range of applications in pharmaceuticals, particularly as an ingredient in anti-acne formulations, due to its oxidising, antibacterial, and keratolytic properties. First studied in 1918, benzyl benzoate is listed by the World Health Organization as a key substance with scabicidal and pediculicidal activity. It exerts a toxic effect on the nervous system of parasites, leading to their elimination. It is also believed to have a detrimental impact on mite eggs, although the exact mechanism of this action has not yet been fully explained.
Benzyl benzoate may cause allergic reactions in some individuals, presenting as itching, skin redness, swelling, or difficulty breathing. It should not be applied to broken skin and must not be taken orally.
